Notes on walking, weather and old drove roads in the Highlands.

Glen Affric in the first week of October

Journal · 3 min read

The birches had turned almost overnight. We started at the River Affric car park before eight and had the loop to ourselves until Athnamulloch, where a pair of stalkers were glassing the slopes above the bothy. Rain came in from the west around noon, as forecast, and stayed.

Worth noting for anyone heading out this month: the bridge below Alltbeithe is fine, but the ford further east is knee-deep after a wet night.

Three short routes for a short day

Routes · 5 min read

When the light only lasts until five, a long ridge is a gamble. These three are under twelve kilometres, have clear paths and good views even under low cloud: the Corrieshalloch gorge and the falls of Measach; the Fairy Glen above Rosemarkie; and the old military road from Dalwhinnie towards Loch Ericht.
